From Tingling to Thriving: Holistic Support for Peripheral Neuropathy During Breast Cancer Treatment

For many women, breast cancer treatment brings a whole range of changes to the body, especially with chemotherapy. One common side effect is peripheral neuropathy – a nerve-related condition that can cause tingling, numbness, burning, or sharp pains in the hands and feet.

It can feel unsettling, but there are many gentle, holistic ways to nurture your nervous system and support your body throughout treatment and beyond.

What Is Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy happens when chemotherapy damages the nerves that send messages between the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the body. This can lead to symptoms such as:

  • Tingling or pins and needles

  • Numbness or reduced sensation

  • Sharp, burning, or stabbing pains

  • Muscle weakness or cramps

  • Loss of balance and coordination

Everyone’s experience is different. Some notice mild tingling that fades, while others find symptoms more persistent. If you experience new or worsening nerve symptoms, always mention them to your oncology team.

Holistic Support for Chemotherapy Side Effects

When it comes to health and wellness, we’re often taught to look first to medication or medical interventions. While these are important, it’s also empowering to remember that there’s so much we can do to support our own healing.

By taking small, nurturing actions, we not only ease symptoms but also begin to reclaim a sense of control over our health and wellbeing.

Gentle Therapies That Can Help

Reflexology Gentle pressure on reflex points in the feet or hands can stimulate the nervous system, improve circulation, and release endorphins – the body’s natural pain relievers. Many women find reflexology deeply relaxing and notice improvements in nerve-related discomfort.

Aromatherapy Essential oils can help reduce nerve inflammation and ease pain. I often blend them into massage oils and combine them with reflexology – my go-to treatment for women in my clinic. Always seek professional advice when using essential oils alongside chemotherapy, as dosage and safety are key.

Acupuncture Acupuncture can also be beneficial for relieving neuropathy symptoms. If you’re not keen on needles or simply want a gentler approach, reflexology with aromatherapy can be a wonderful alternative.

Cold Therapy Some women use cold therapy, such as ice packs on hands and feet during chemotherapy, to reduce the risk of neuropathy. It’s not for everyone, but it can help protect the nerves. If you try it, bring a cosy blanket and warm socks for comfort afterwards.

Movement and Gentle Exercise Simple, low-impact movement like stretching, yoga, or walking helps keep circulation flowing and muscles strong. Rolling the arch of your foot over a small spikey Pilates ball can also ease tension.

Mind-Body Practices Breathwork, relaxation, and guided meditation can calm the mind and ease discomfort. When the mind relaxes, the body often follows. I always encourage my clients to become best friends with their mind-body connection – it’s more powerful than you might think.

Nutrition Nerve health is closely linked to nutrition. While standard oncology advice often focuses on maintaining weight, the quality of your food truly matters. Food is medicine.

B vitamins (especially B1, B6, and B12) are vital for nerve repair and energy production. Other nutrients that may support nerve health include:

  • Vitamin D – reduces inflammation and supports nerve signalling

  • Magnesium – promotes nerve regeneration and may relieve pain

  • Omega-3 fatty acids – found in oily fish, nuts, and flaxseeds, known for their anti-inflammatory effects

  • Antioxidants – Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Selenium help protect nerves from oxidative stress

Always discuss supplements with your oncology or integrative healthcare team to ensure they’re safe for your treatment plan.
