Spotlight on: The Sacral Chakra

Updated: Mar 4, 2023

Often when we feel a bit ‘off’ or lacking in motivation and creativity, there’s an underlying chakra imbalance behind our thoughts and emotions. The sophisticated chakra system is new to the west, but it’s been integrated with modern medicine for thousands of years in the east (find out more about the chakras here). Knowing and appreciating the influence the chakra system can have on our lives can be really crucial for our mental and physical health.

Today we’re focusing on the sacral chakra, in the first of a series of blogs I’ll be sharing ahead of an exciting new programme I’ll be launching later this year.

Known as the second chakra, our sacral chakra sits just below our belly button. For women especially sacral chakra imbalances are incredibly common, and can manifest in a number of ways. When it is in balance, our sacral chakra supports our natural sense of emotional and physical wellbeing and creativity - and as one of the lower chakras, we need to work with this first before we address any other imbalances.

What is the sacral chakra?

The sacral chakra is one of our lowest chakras, sitting just below the belly button. Expressed through the colour orange, our sacral chakra governs our emotions, creativity, sensitivity, intimacy, self-expression and emotional wellbeing. It vibrates on the same frequency as our bladder, kidneys, reproductive organs and lymphatic and circulatory systems. For this reason, I have particular interest in the sacral chakra – as many of my patients experience concerns in these areas and can benefit from sacral chakra healing.

Signs of a balanced sacral chakra

When our sacral chakra is in balance, we feel physically and emotionally stable, creative, motivated, safe, fulfilled and joyful.

Signs of an imbalanced sacral chakra

When the sacral chakra is imbalanced, a person may experience emotional and physical instability, fatigue, fear, depression, overwhelm, lost imagination or lack of creativity and reproductive issues.

How can I rebalance the sacral chakra?

There are many methods you can tap into to help rebalance your sacral chakra – you’ll likely feel naturally called to the ones which suit you the most. These include:

Crystal healing: Crystals vibrate at certain frequencies and can have a calming and healing effect on the body. Certain crystals like amber and citrine correspond to the sacral chakra. Crystals can be placed around your home, under your pillow or carried with you for relief and support throughout the day.

Reiki: Reiki or energy healing is wonderful for rebalancing the chakras. Your reiki practitioner will be intuitively guided to the chakras that need the most work.

Chakra yoga: Chakra yoga works with each individual chakra to rebalance and heal through targeted movement and relaxation. Book onto a sacral chakra yoga class or a chakra yoga course, which will likely involve hip-opening movements to work into any stuck energy in this area of the body.

Creativity and expression: Indulge your creative side and let those juices flow doing something you love – whether it’s writing, painting, flower arranging – the choice is yours!

Nutrition: Certain foods nourish specific chakras – and as you may have guessed, foods with corresponding colours are often the most balancing! Think sweet potato, carrots, mango, pumpkin, orange, butternut squash and seeds.

If you suspect your sacral chakra may be out of balance, or are experiencing symptoms you need support with, get in touch today for a free, friendly chat about how you’re feeling, and what healing methods may be best suited to you.
